Start with the right boat type
Decide how you will use the boat. Families who cruise calm lakes usually want a pontoon or a bowrider. Anglers should look at bass boats or aluminum fishing boats.
Inspect the hull and engine
Walk around the boat on the trailer. Look for cracks, soft spots in the deck and signs of water in the bilge. Ask for engine hours and service records.
Always do a sea trial
Run the boat at idle, cruise and wide open throttle. Watch the gauges and listen for unusual noises.
Check the paperwork
Confirm the title, the hull identification number and current state registration. Browse boats by state to find boats you can see in person.
