Registration and the boater license

Boat registration in Alabama is handled through county license offices, and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) Marine Patrol Division enforces boating law. Alabama is one of the few states with an actual boater license: anyone 12 or older operating a motorized vessel on state waters needs a vessel license, earned by passing an approved course or exam and then purchased through the probate or license office. Children 12 and 13 must have an adult on board.

Alabama only started titling boats in 2024. Under the vessel title law, a title is required for any boat built after December 31, 2023 that is mainly used in Alabama, though boats under 18 feet only need one if they have an engine of 75 horsepower or more. Owners of older boats 26 feet and longer can choose to title them. The Alabama Department of Revenue charges a $20 title application fee plus a $5 agent fee, and you have to apply within 20 days of buying. Most used boats on the market were built before 2024 and have no title, so get a bill of sale and the current registration and check that the hull ID matches the paperwork.

Lakes and rivers

Lake Guntersville on the Tennessee River is a nationally known bass lake with hydrilla beds, big tournaments and Lake Guntersville State Park. Wheeler, Wilson and Pickwick lakes continue the TVA chain. Lake Martin, a deep Alabama Power reservoir near Alexander City, is known for clear water, lake homes and Chimney Rock. Lewis Smith Lake north of Birmingham is deep and clear, and Lake Eufaula on the Georgia line is famous for bass.

On the coast, Mobile Bay, the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, Dauphin Island, Orange Beach and Perdido Bay give access to the Gulf. Orange Beach is a charter fishing hub, with red snapper season a major event.

Popular boats

Bass boats rule the TVA lakes. Pontoons and wakeboats are common on Lake Martin and Smith Lake. On the coast, bay boats and center consoles are the norm, and the Mobile area has shipbuilding and boatbuilding history.

Mild winters mean fishing year-round. Recreational boating peaks from April through October.

Buying tips for Alabama boats

Gulf boats need saltwater checks: corrosion, trailer condition, steering and wiring. Ask about hurricane history, since storms such as Sally in 2020 damaged many boats around Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. TVA lake bass boats often have heavy hours, so check the engine hours, lower unit and trolling motor. Grass from Guntersville can clog intakes, so check water pressure.
