Regal Boats for Sale
Regal is a family-owned builder in Orlando, Florida, and one of the biggest privately held boat companies in the world. The used market is mostly bowriders and express cruisers, with a growing number of outboard models.
The Kuck family
Paul and Carol Kuck founded Regal Marine Industries in 1969 with investors Gene Kandel and Clark Prudhon. The first boats were a 17-foot tri-hull, a 14-foot ski boat and a 21-foot cuddy. The 1973 oil embargo nearly put the company under, but it survived. Regal shipped its first boat overseas, to Austria, in 1976, and built its first yacht-class boat, the Commodore 360, in 1988.
Their sons Duane and Tim now run the company, with the third generation working in the business. Regal builds in Orlando, with a second plant in Valdosta, Georgia, and says it has been debt-free since 2003.
Regal names, decoded
- LS (LS2, LS4, LS6, LS9, LS36): sterndrive bowriders. The higher the number, the bigger the boat.
- LX (LX2 to LX43): outboard-powered versions of the same idea. The LX line came out for 2020 at 22 to 26 feet and now runs up to the LX43.
- Surf (LS2 Surf to 38 Surf): wake-surf versions.
- OBX (21 OBX, 33 OBX): outboard bowriders built for a mix of fishing and cruising.
- SAV (34 to 50 SAV): sport activity vessels with outboards, cabins and big cockpits. The 50 SAV is the 2024 flagship.
- Express, Grande Coupe and flybridge models such as the 3300.
Older Regals mostly used four-digit names, and the 2000 ES still carries that style in the current lineup.
Regal markets its hull designs as FasTrac and, on newer models, OceanTrac, and uses infusion construction on the larger boats. "Ultimate" in a listing means the top trim level with custom upholstery and options.
Checking a used Regal
Sterndrive or outboard. Most used Regals before 2020 are sterndrives, usually Volvo Penta or MerCruiser. Ask for bellows, gimbal and U-joint records, and for risers and manifolds if it has been in salt.
Cruiser systems. On express cruisers, test the generator, air conditioning, the head and holding tank, the water heater and the windlass. Check the cabin for water stains around hatches and windows.
Cored decks. Walk the deck, especially around the cleats, rails and swim platform, for soft spots. Spider cracks at fittings can mean water in the core.
Surf systems. On Surf models, run the ballast pumps and check for leaks under the floor, and test the surf system at speed.
Engine hours. A family boat with 50 to 100 hours a year is normal. Low-hour older boats that sat a long time can have their own problems with fuel and seals.
Spec sheet: the LS4
The LS4 is Regal's 24-foot sterndrive bowrider. Regal lists it at 24'5" with an 8'6" beam and a 22-degree deadrise. It carries 56 gallons of fuel and weighs 4,550 lbs dry. Draft is 24 inches with the drive up and 35 inches with it down. Regal has published performance bulletins for it with the Volvo Penta V8-350 and V8-300 engines.
Check the drive on any used LS4. Ask for the service records on the bellows and gear oil and get a compression test on the engine.
