Sea Hunt builds affordable saltwater center consoles and bay boats in Columbia, South Carolina. It has long been one of the top-selling center console brands, so there are plenty of used ones to choose from.
Vic and Bubba Roof
Vic Roof had already built and sold Sunbird Boat Company to Outboard Marine Corp. When his son Bubba finished college and wanted to build boats too, the two started Sea Hunt in 1995 in a one-room shop outside Columbia. The first boat was a 15-footer, followed by 17s and 19s, and a 23-footer put the company on the map. Sea Hunt now builds about 2,100 to 2,200 boats a year at a 170,000-square-foot plant on Shop Road in Columbia. Bubba Roof is president and CEO.
Sea Hunt says it was the first builder to offer center consoles with extra bow seating and bow backrests for families. The hulls have a flared "Carolina" bow to keep spray down.
The model lines
Ultra is the family line and the most popular. Sea Hunt's own specs:
- Ultra 219: 21'4", 8'3" beam, 2,350 lb, 200 hp max, 60 gal fuel.
- Ultra 234: 23'7", 8'6" beam, 2,800 lb, 250 hp max, 96 gal.
- Ultra 255SE: 24'11", 8'9" beam, 4,600 lb, 350 hp max, 120 gal.
- Ultra 275SE: 27'5", 9'9" beam, 5,600 lb, 500 hp max, 179 gal.
- Ultra 305CB: 30'2", 9'9" beam, 7,000 lb, 700 hp max, 230 gal.
Gamefish is the offshore line, from the Gamefish 25 (25'8", 400 hp, 145 gal) to the 30FS and 30CB (30'2", 700 hp, 230 gal). BX (Bay Extreme) boats are for shallow-water fishing with extra seating. Older listings also include the Triton line, which was more fishing-focused than the Ultra.
What to check on a used Sea Hunt
Outboards. Get hours, service records and compression numbers. Check the lower unit oil and look for corrosion on the bracket and mounting bolts. Saltwater boats should have been flushed after every trip, so ask.
Hull and deck. Look for stress cracks in the gelcoat around the console, T-top mounts and cleats, and for repairs on the bow from beaching.
T-top. Shake it. Loose or cracked mounts are a common repair on center consoles.
Pumps and livewells. Run the bilge pump, raw-water washdown and livewell. Check the bilge for oil and standing water.
Trailer. Most smaller Sea Hunts come with a trailer that has been dunked in saltwater. Check the brakes, bearings, bunks and the frame for rust.
