Stingray Boats for Sale

Stingray builds fiberglass bowriders, deck boats and cuddies in Hartsville, South Carolina. It is a family-owned company known for its Z-Plane hull, and used Stingrays are usually a good-value way into a fast fiberglass runabout.

Al Fink and Hartsville

Al Fink founded Stingray in Hartsville, South Carolina in 1979, and the company is still privately owned and run by the family. It sells mostly smaller, trailerable runabouts, which is why so many used Stingrays come with a trailer.

The Z-Plane hull

Stingray patented its Z-Plane hull in 1991. The bottom has flat horizontal planing surfaces built into the V, and a notched transom that lets the propeller bite cleaner water. Stingray says this gives more speed, better fuel economy and better handling for a given engine.

The 212SC deck boat

Stingray lists the 212SC at 21'11" long with a 102-inch beam and a 14-inch draft. It holds 50 gallons of usable fuel, weighs about 3,100 lb dry with a 150 hp engine, and is rated for 12 people or 2,600 lb and up to 200 hp. The 102-inch beam gives deck boat room, but at 8'6" plus it is right at the limit for towing without a permit in many states, so check your own state's rules.

What to check on a used Stingray

Gelcoat and laminate cracks. Stingrays are light, which helps the speed, but owners on boating forums report fine cracks along the lifting strakes and flex in rough water. Look along the strakes and chines with the boat out of the water. Cracks in gelcoat only are cosmetic; cracks that show glass fibers are not.

Transom. A surveyor's report posted by one 240LS owner found the plywood transom core debonding from the laminate and stress cracks at the bow. Check the transom corners and push the outdrive or outboard hard from side to side while someone watches the transom for movement.

Recalls. The Coast Guard lists a 2017 recall on 356 Stingray 182 SC boats for level flotation and certification labeling, now closed. Run the HIN on any 2017 182 SC and confirm the fix.

Rattles and fittings. Owners mention screws backing out of dashes and doors in chop. Check the helm, seat frames and cabin doors for loose hardware.

Use. These are lake and river boats first. Ask where it was used, and be more careful with one that spent its life on big open water.
