Boats for Sale in Wyoming

Wyoming boating spans mountain lakes and high-desert reservoirs. Flaming Gorge, Boysen, Glendo, Seminoe, Pathfinder and the lakes of Grand Teton National Park all draw boaters.

Titles and registration

Wyoming Game and Fish registers boats for one or three years. For a new boat or a transfer of ownership of a motorized boat you need:

  • a county-issued title in your name
  • proof that Wyoming sales tax was paid
  • possibly a HIN inspection by a law enforcement officer

With the title and sales tax paperwork in hand, register at any Game and Fish office or by mail. Allow 10 days for mailed or online registrations to arrive. In the meantime, you can operate on a notarized bill of sale for up to 30 days.

If your boat was registered in another state, bring a title or registration in your name from that state to a Game and Fish office. Wyoming registrations can be renewed online, by mail or in person.

AIS decals and inspections

Nearly every boat on Wyoming waters needs an aquatic invasive species (AIS) decal. The exceptions are non-motorized inflatables 10 feet or less, paddleboards and water toys, and those still need inspections. Decals cost $5 to $30 depending on the boat and where it's registered or the owner lives, and they're valid for the calendar year. Buy online or from a license agent, and your receipt lets you launch for 30 business days while the decal is mailed. Put it on the starboard bow, 6 inches from the registration decal.

The decal isn't proof of inspection. Boats entering Wyoming must be inspected before launch. A Wyoming decal is required in Grand Teton National Park and on the Wyoming part of shared waters like Flaming Gorge and Palisades. Yellowstone and the Wind River Indian Reservation set their own rules.

Who can drive

Wyoming doesn't require boating education. Game and Fish recommends a NASBLA-approved course, which also helps if you boat in states that do require one. A person must be 16, or be accompanied by an adult, to operate a numbered motorboat, including a PWC.

Where to boat

Flaming Gorge straddles the Utah line in the southwest. Boysen, Glendo, Seminoe, Pathfinder, Alcova and Keyhole are reservoirs spread around the state. Jackson Lake and Jenny Lake are in Grand Teton. Wind is a constant in Wyoming, and storms come fast in the mountains, so check forecasts and watch the sky.

Popular boats

Aluminum fishing boats, pontoons, ski boats, jet boats for rivers and drift boats for trout.

Buying tips for Wyoming

Get the notarized bill of sale first so you can use the boat for 30 days, then get the county title and pay sales tax. Check that the HIN matches the paperwork, since an inspection may be required. Budget for the AIS decal, and if the boat comes from out of state, plan an inspection before your first launch.

In Wyoming, you'll need a county title in your name and proof of sales tax before Game and Fish will register a motorized boat. You can operate on a notarized bill of sale for 30 days while you wait. Boats from Flaming Gorge or Boysen should be checked for wind and wave wear and trailer tires for sun damage.
