EdgeWater Boats for Sale

EdgeWater Power Boats builds unsinkable center console and dual console boats in Edgewater, Florida. The founder came from Boston Whaler, and it shows: these are foam-filled, heavily built boats aimed at families who fish.

A Boston Whaler engineer's company

Bob Dougherty spent decades at Boston Whaler, where he was director of engineering, and helped move Whaler's production to Edgewater, Florida in the early 1980s. In 1992 he developed an 18-foot center console, the Marlin, in a garage in the same town. Its "Permagrid" foam-and-grid construction was the start of EdgeWater. The company says it was formally founded in 1996. Dougherty died in 2016, and his son Stephen, who worked with him from the start, later started Solace Boats.

In March 2023 the Swedish Nimbus Group bought EdgeWater. The boats are still built in Edgewater, Florida, where the company says it has more than 175 workers in a 94,000 square foot plant.

Single-Piece Infusion

EdgeWater created its Single-Piece Infusion process in 2005 and has used it on every hull 22 feet and up since 2008. Foam composite stringers, knitted fiberglass and vinylester resin go into a closed mold under vacuum, so the hull and its structure come out as one part. EdgeWater claims this makes an SPI hull three times stronger than an open-molded one. That is the builder's figure, not an independent test, but the practical result for a buyer is that there is no wood in the structure of an SPI EdgeWater to rot.

Every EdgeWater is built to be unsinkable, and the warranty is a limited lifetime warranty that transfers to later owners.

Models and specs

EdgeWater sorts its range into center consoles and the CX dual consoles, which it calls crossovers. It introduced 20 and 24-foot dual consoles in 2007, and Boating Magazine called the 230CX the "SUV of salt water" when it came out in 2020. Some numbers from EdgeWater's site:

  • 170CC: 30 gallons of fuel, 115 hp max, about 2,150 lb.
  • 248CX: 24'6" long, 8'6" beam, 120 gallons of fuel, 350 hp max.
  • 262CX: 155 gallons of fuel, 500 hp max, about 7,200 lb with engines.

Most current EdgeWaters come with Yamaha outboards and Garmin electronics.

What to check on a used EdgeWater

Old capacity recalls. The Coast Guard lists two closed EdgeWater recalls, both about the capacity label rather than the structure. One was a 1999 recall on the 155 CC for its maximum weight and passenger figures, and the other a 2003 recall on a 13-foot skiff for its maximum weight. If you are looking at either, check that the capacity plate has been replaced with the corrected one.

Hull age. Boats under 22 feet and anything built before SPI went fleet-wide in 2008 are not one-piece infused. Ask the year and length, and on an older or smaller boat have a surveyor check the deck around the console, cleats and rod holders.

Warranty transfer. Because the hull warranty transfers, ask the seller for the original paperwork and check with an EdgeWater dealer how to register the transfer. It adds real value to a used boat.

Yamaha rigs. Twin Yamahas on a 262CX are a big part of the price. Get hours from the engine computer, not the seller, and ask for Yamaha dealer service records.

Weight on the trailer. At over 7,000 lb with engines, a 262CX needs a serious tow vehicle and a trailer with brakes on both axles. Check the trailer as carefully as the boat.
