Lagoon Catamarans for Sale

Lagoon is the biggest builder of cruising catamarans in the world, with more than 7,000 boats launched since 1984. It's part of Groupe Beneteau and builds in France. Lagoons fill the charter fleets of the Caribbean, so the used market is large, and plenty of boats come out of charter.

From racing trimarans to charter cats

Lagoon started in 1984 as Jeanneau Techniques Avancées, Jeanneau's multihull division. Naval architects Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot-Prévost of VPLP, who also designed Formula 40 racing multihulls, drew the boats. The first cruising cat was built almost as a side project, but orders kept coming. The division later went to Construction Navale Bordeaux, which Beneteau bought in the early 1990s. VPLP has designed every generation since.

Lagoon has also built boats in the US. The original Lagoon 42 of 1990 to 1994 was built partly by TPI Composites, the Pearson company in Rhode Island, and was sold as the Moorings 4200 for charter. Only 51 were built.

The original Lagoon 42

42'6" long, 22'8" beam, 4'5" draft on twin fixed keels, 16,550 lb, 1,119 sq ft of sail, twin 27 hp Perkins or Yanmar diesels, 80 gallons of fuel and 160 of water. The TPI boats were resin-infused with balsa core and vinylester resin. In 2026 a 1993 TPI 42 in Miami was listed on YachtWorld for $99,000 as-is, with a failed Perkins that needed replacing.

The 2016 Lagoon 42

The current 42 replaced the 420 and 421, of which Lagoon built 170. Per Lagoon: 42' hull, 43'4" overall, 25'2" beam, 4'2" draft, 26,681 lb light, 1,011 sq ft upwind sail area with a self-tacking jib, twin 57 hp diesels, 151 gallons of fuel and 79 of water. Some versions have 45 hp Yanmars instead.

The big change was the rig. Lagoon's Fred Signat told Cruising World the mast is 53 percent of the way aft on the 42, versus 37 percent on the Lagoon 380, to cut pitching. It won Cruising World's 2017 Boat of the Year for full-size multihulls under 50 feet, and SAIL's Best Multihull Cruising Boat of 41 to 50 feet.

Used prices

YachtWorld's Lagoon 42 listings in 2026 ran from about $300,000 for European 2018s up to $748,612 for 2024 boats. A 2018 owner's version in Cape Coral, Florida with 57 hp Yanmars, 1,500 hours and a generator was listed at $395,000 by The Multihull Company. A 2020 ex-Sunsail charter boat in Saint Lucia with 1,762 hours was $329,000. CatamaranSite reports a median sold price of $499,000 across 62 recorded sales.

What to check on a used Lagoon

Charter history. Many used Lagoons come out of charter fleets. Charter boats are cheaper but have hard-used hours, interiors and sails. Ask for the charter company's maintenance logs.

Owner's or charter layout. The three-cabin owner's version gives one hull to a master suite. Four-cabin charter layouts sell for less.

Saildrives. Check the saildrive seals, oil and service dates on both engines. Find out whether it has the 45 or 57 hp option.

Core moisture. The hulls and decks are cored. Have the surveyor take moisture readings around deck fittings and chainplates.

Import duty. Many Lagoons were delivered in Europe or the Caribbean. Confirm US duty has been paid and ask for the customs paperwork (CBP Form 7501).

Rig and sails. Check the age of the standing rigging and the self-tacking jib track.
