Sea Fox Boats for Sale
Sea Fox builds saltwater center consoles, bay boats and dual consoles near Charleston, South Carolina. The family behind it has been building boats in the Lowcountry since the 1950s. The boats are known for coming loaded with standard equipment at prices well below the premium brands.
Four generations of Renken boats
The story starts with Walter "Palsey" Renken, whose boat business goes back to 1957. His grandson Freddy Renken started at Renken Boats as a teenager in the mid-1980s, in the deck rigging department. He worked in the warehouse and the finishing department before becoming plant manager. Renken struggled through the early-1990s recession and closed in 1995.
That same year Freddy and his brother Eddy started Sea Fox, so the family never missed a season. According to the Post and Courier, Sea Fox built about 70 boats in 1995 and peaked at 3,000 a year in 2005. Ryan Balderson (product development) and Chris Nemeth (engineering) joined in 2004 and are minority partners.
The 288 Commander
The Commander line covers family center consoles from 18 to 32 feet. The 288 sits near the top. Sea Fox's spec sheet lists it at 28'0" by 9'8", with an 18-degree transom deadrise, 18-inch hull draft and 30-inch transom. It weighs 6,000 lb dry without motors and up to 9,240 lb loaded with the biggest engines, and is rated for 600 hp. Cockpit depth is 27 inches aft and 36 inches at the bow.
Yamaha tested one in August 2017 with twin F300s, two people and half a tank of fuel, at a test weight of 8,284 lb. It hit 30 mph in 4.5 seconds and topped out at 58.5 mph at 6,000 rpm. The most efficient cruise was 3,000 rpm: 29.4 mph at 12.7 gph, for 2.32 mpg.
Florida Sportsman's review found it "remarkably stable" on a beam-sea drift and easy to keep over wrecks with the standard SeaStar electric power steering. Its MSRP was $210,466 at the time. Standard gear included 30 and 45-gallon pressurized livewells, two 140-quart insulated fish boxes with pumpouts, a 65-quart Yeti on an electric slide, an Ultima hardtop with a power moonroof and misting system, JL Audio, a windlass, a dive door and an electric head in the console.
Prices
New 288s sell well under sticker. In 2026 a Melbourne, Florida dealer listed one with twin Yamaha 300s at an MSRP of $238,670 and a sale price of $185,990. Cove 2 Coast Marine in Richmond Hill, Georgia listed one with twin F250s at $189,999. Clermont, Florida's Liquid Planet Marine had several 288s at $219,990 to $229,990. Used boats need to be priced against those discounted new boats, not against MSRP.
What to check on a used Sea Fox
Electric slide cooler and moonroof. These are standard on many Commanders. Run the Yeti slide, the moonroof, the misting system and the trim tab switches.
Livewell pumps. Pressurized wells need working pumps, seals and lid gaskets. Fill both wells and watch for leaks.
Hardtop mounting. Check the powder-coated frame and the deck mounts for cracks and corrosion, especially on boats kept in salt.
Steering. Make sure the electric power steering works smoothly from lock to lock, with no warnings at the helm.
Engine year versus model year. One 2026 listing had 2024 engines. Check the engine serials and warranty dates separately from the hull.
Recalls. With thousands of Sea Fox hulls built since 1995, look up the specific HIN in the Coast Guard recall list rather than the model name.
