Yellowfin Boats for Sale

Yellowfin builds premium offshore center consoles and bay boats in Sarasota, Florida. Its stepped hulls come from founder Wylie Nagler's offshore racing background, and the boats are known for running hard and fast in rough water. They hold their value about as well as any boat on the market.

From flats boats to offshore racers

Nagler worked with offshore race teams before founding Back Country Powerboats, a flats-boat builder that showed its first boat at the 1993 Miami Boat Show. He sold Back Country to Champion in 1998 and signed a non-compete for small boats, so he went bigger. Yellowfin Yachts started in 1998 and launched its first model, a 31-footer, in 2000.

By 2012 Sarasota Magazine reported the company had 110 employees and was selling nearly 150 boats a year, priced from $35,000 to $500,000. In a Soundings interview, Nagler called the 36 "the backbone of the company" and said the 24 Bay was nine months backordered, with one built a week. Yellowfin is now part of Warbird Marine Holdings.

Yellowfin 36 Offshore

Sport Fishing lists the specs as 36'8" long, 10' beam, 477 gallons of fuel, 9,500 lb dry with power, and 1,350 hp max. The hull has two steps. With triple Mercury 400 V10s, three people and 100 gallons of fuel, it hit 70.5 mph, cruised at 45 mph, and had a maximum range of 525 miles.

Suzuki ran one with triple DF350s in January 2019, in heavy chop and 15 to 20 mph winds. It topped out at 67.1 mph, reached plane in 6.53 seconds, and was most efficient at 3,000 rpm: 31.3 mph, 1.48 mpg, and a theoretical range of 636 miles.

An earlier Sport Fishing test of a 36 with triple Mercury 300 Verados ran in 8 to 10 foot seas off Sarasota and held 20 to 25 mph without using the trim tabs. That boat had a 24-degree deadrise, 510 gallons in three aluminum tanks, and an MSRP of $224,000. The laminate used 100 percent vinylester resin with Core-Cell foam.

The 39 Offshore and older 34s

The 39 Offshore is 39'8" by 11'6" and about 13,000 lb, with up to quad outboards. Earlier 34 Offshores are a more affordable way into the brand.

Used prices

What to check on a used Yellowfin

Stepped bottom. Inspect the steps and the strakes behind them for impact damage and repairs. A survey with a moisture meter is worth paying for.

Fuel tanks. Older 36s carry three aluminum tanks amidships. Ask whether they've been inspected or replaced, and look for corrosion where the tanks are supported.

Electric fish box rams. The forward box on the 36 lifts on electric rams. Make sure they work smoothly and the seals are tight.

Triple and quad engines. Get records for every engine and compare compression and hours across them.

Tournament history. Many Yellowfins have fished tournaments hard. Ask how the boat was used and look at the gunwales and rod holders for wear.

Recalls and warranty. Check the hull number in the Coast Guard recall database, and ask a dealer whether any factory warranty transfers.
